Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation – Why It’s Important and What We Can Do?

Water is a resource essential for life on the planet. However, access to clean drinking water is a problem for billions worldwide. Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) aims to ensure access to water for all. Let’s explore why this is so crucial.

Water is not just for drinking. The demand for it increases yearly due to rapid urbanization, population growth, and the development of agriculture, industry, and energy sectors. Prolonged misuse of water resources has led to a shortage of clean water.
Ukraine’s water resources are under even greater threat. The war has significantly impacted the ecosystem of rivers and lakes. Pollution from military actions, damage to infrastructure, and overall pressure on natural resources create real challenges. To minimize them, action is needed.

What can we do?

  1. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or washing dishes.
  2. Use water-saving attachments on taps and showerheads.
  3. Collect rainwater for watering gardens and plants.
  4. Water plants should be planted early in the morning or the evening to reduce evaporation.  Choose cleaning products that do not pollute water.
  5. Quickly repair leaking taps and pipes to avoid water waste.
  6. Run washing machines and dishwashers only when fully loaded.
  7. Implement wastewater purification practices in communities, using natural water filtration methods.
  8. Support projects that restore water resources and monitor water quality.
  9. Share knowledge about the importance of water conservation with family and friends.

Clean water is our common good, and we can contribute to its preservation. Remember: protecting water resources starts with small daily actions!
